Fuzzy
Thinking
Nobody was better at turning a western into a laugh-getter
than PRC's resident elf, Al "Fuzzy" St. John. In fight scenes, for
example, he was always in everybody's way, taking punches from not only the
bad guys, but from the heroes as well. And in some of those scenes,
both good guys and bad had trouble keeping a straight face.
Bad guy Charlie King recalled: "He was always coming up with funny stuff.
If something unexpected happened during a scene, or an accident occurred,
he turned that into a gag.
"In one scene he split his pants and sewing them up became a gag. Holding
a needle in one hand and thread in the other, he slowly brought the two together
crossing his eyes."
Al sidekicked for a lot of our heroes, but is best remembered for the "Fuzzy
thinking" he brought to westerns starring the young man with a bullwhip,
Al La Rue. PRC lassoed La Rue at Warners to play bad guys in Eddie
Dean westerns. When fan mail began pouring in for La Rue, PRC had Lash
La Rue, King of the Bullwhip, saddle up to make the west safe for little
whippersnappers.
